St Johns Wood is a highly desirable, exclusive and cosmopolitan residential part of north-west London just north-west of Regents Park, enjoying some of the most expensive homes in the UK, yet this area still retains a village feel and has a large conservation area.

Located in the postcode NW8, St Johns Wood is located in the City of Westminster and within easy access to the West End, Regent's Park and Primrose Hill. In addition, Canary Wharf can be reached directly due to an extention of the Jubillee line underground from St Johns Wood to Canary Wharf. There is a large American community relocating in and around the area due to the presence of the American School in London.

Also famous are the Abbey Road studios, where The Beatles recorded and still used by many famous musical artists; and Lord's Cricket Ground, which is the home of Middlesex County Cricket Club and arguably the home of English cricket. St Johns Wood High Street has a wonderful atmosphere and provides a wide selection of designer boutiques, shops, restaurants and cafes with an international feel.

The St Johns Wood residents are often rich and famous with a mix of families, professionals, politicians and international students. One well-known resident is Sir Paul McCartney who has owned a property in the area since the 1960's.

Brief history of St Johns Wood

St. John's was once part of the Great Forest of Middlesex and named after the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem who owned it in 1323.

Most of St Johns Wood was acquired in 1732 by the Eyre family apart from a small piece of land, around Barrow Hill, which was owned by the Portland Estate. In 1574 a second, smaller estate alongside the Edgware Road, which included Hamilton Terrace, was acquired by John Lyon, which he later left to his foundation, Harrow School, on trust to maintain the roads between London and Harrow in good repair.

From the early 19th century onwards estate agents in St Johns Wood were delighted when the area became one of the first London suburbs to be developed with a large amount of low density "villa" housing instead of the terraced housing which was usually the norm in London at that time.
