South Kensington is an affluent and lively area which has some the finest architecture and most exclusive homes in the world. It is located south of Hyde Park and west of Knightsbridge in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

South Kensington is a truly cosmopolitan area with a vibrant feel and an amazing selection of cultural attractions, restaurants, cafes and shops. The area benefits from its position close to Kensington Gardens at the western side of Hyde Park and some parts of Kensington and Knightsbridge also have the postcode SW7.

The properties in South Kensington have a Victorian influence and are mainly stunning period buildings including houses, mansion blocks and conversions set on attractive residential streets and private roads.

South Kensington residents include corporates and embassies as well as international families: including French expatriates due to the presence of the French Consulate, French Institute and Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle secondary school.

Brief history of South Kensington

The South Kensington area was largely undeveloped until the mid-19th century, being an agricultural area supplying London with fruit and vegetables.

In 1851 an 87 acre (352,000 m2) area around what is now Exhibition Road was purchased by the commissioners of the "Great Exhibition" which took place in Hyde Park, because they wanted to create an area for dedication to the arts and sciences. And so many South Kensington museums were founded under the direct inspiration of Prince Albert.

In 1876 Queen Victoria dedicated a memorial to the late Prince Albert.
