Brief history of Mayfair

In 1677, an aristocrat, Sir Thomas Grosvenor, married Mary Davies who had inherited 500 acres of land north of the Thames and west of City of London.

On part of this land from 1686 an annual “May Fair” took place. It started from May Day and lasted for a fortnight on the site that is Shepherd Market today. However, residents complained that the riotous behavior of the visitors to the fair lowered the tone of the neighbourhood and so the fair was banned in that location and moved to East London.

It was not until the 1720’s that Sir Richard Grosvenor developed the northern part of that land around Grosvenor Square which became a fashionable residential location, and was named Mayfair. The Rothchild family bought up large areas of Mayfair in the 19th century and the freeholds of a large section of Mayfair belongs to the Crown Estate.
